Review: Craftworld Aleste クラフトワールドアレスタ by Stellakris

I only have one problem with Stellakris’ amazing new vertical scrolling shoot-em-up: I suck at vertical scrolling shoot-em-ups! Still, I felt I had to showcase this outstanding re-make of a 1988 MSX title so to capture the video I had to employ the ancient art of… getting someone else to do it for me. That being the case, this short review is based on what I played of the first 4 minutes of the game and saw of the remaining six, with Stellakris himself at the controls.

Aleste opens with an amazing cutscene introducing our fighter jet-piloting hero, Ellinor Waizen. Back-story isn’t often something you need in a level like this but it’s welcome if only for the eye candy alone. The sets and effects are astounding and really build anticipation for what’s to come.

This level itself is deep. Really deep. Craftworld Aleste features myriad combinations of difficulty settings, weapon options and control tweaks, and that’s before you’ve even got past the menu. Once inside you’re in for an abundance of power-ups and specials to help you take down the vast array of air and ground-based enemies. It’s all presented beautifully too with amazingly detailed ships and environments and retro soundtrack that’s like a nostalgia feast for the ears.

All this in just the first stage. The creator plans on releasing a further four stages over the coming months (and possibly years). So if you don’t already, make sure you heart Stellakris and follow him in LBP Hub so you find out as soon and the next instalment is ready. In the meantime, I’ll be working on trying to be a little less crappy.
