Happy 2013 everyone! It seems strange to be wishing you a happy new year in March but it goes to show how long it’s been since we did one of these. Thank you to everyone who’s contacted us over the last few months – it’s great to hear that so many of you are still eager to take part and with that in-mind, let’s not waste any more time…

Challenge 18 - Bomb Transporter

Your task this time is to build a vehicle capable of safely transporting some very delicate cargo… a gigantic and rather deadly bomb of the could-explode-at-any-random-time variety!!

cc18-bomb But that’s not all! We want you to transport this bomb over three obstacles specifically designed to make this job much more difficult (because we’re evil like that). The bomb will explode if it’s shaken too much or comes to a sudden stop too quickly, so we’re looking for a contraption that carries it carefully rather than quickly.

For this challenge we’re providing a few objects which you must use; the bomb and three obstacles which you must place in the path of your contraption in any order. These can all be collected in our Contraption Challenge 18 Toolkit level.

Do

Make sure your contraption can safely transport the bomb over all three obstacles without it exploding.
Use each of the obstacles provided at least once.
Make sure your contraption is reasonably sized, in proportion to the obstacles.
Publish your level before 23:59 BST on 31st March 2013.
Include “CC18″ at the beginning of your level title (eg. “CC18 – My Bomb Transporter”).
Make sure your level is accessible from LBP.me (find out how to change your settings here).
Try to keep the level no more than 3 minutes long.

Do Not

Resize the bomb or alter it or its logic in any way.
Attach the bomb to your contraption with glue or connectors.
Resize the obstacles.
No flying, teleporting, launching the bomb, destroying or bypassing the obstacles in any way. Drive over them!
Add unnecessary functionality to your contraption, unrelated to the challenge.
A Sackbot with logic doesn’t count as a contraption – you must build something.
Create a long, unskippable introduction. Remember we will have a lot to judge!
Publish or republish your level after the deadline for any reason, or you WILL be disqualified.
Publish more than one level and one contraption.
Harm any cats during the making or playing of your level.

Once the contest closes, we’ll play all the levels and choose our five favourites. It will then be over to you guys and gals to vote and decide the winner. Thanks to the lovely LittleBigPlanet Community Team, all five finalists will receive an LBP Cap and the new Emergency Services costume and kart packs. The winner will also receive a Rare Prize Crown and the Contraption Challenge in-game pin. Check-out this haul…

Some questions you might have

Q: Which versions of LittleBigPlanet is this challenge for?
A: Unfortunately this challenge is for LittleBigPlanet 2 only. This is to make sure every finalist has an equal chance of having their level played and voted-for… Keep an eye out for CC19 soon though ;)

Q: Can I use the PlayStation Move or Cross-Controller functionality in my level?
A: Sure! But bear in mind that if you are a finalist, not all voters will be able to play your level.

Q: Can I enter in a team?
A: You can enter either by yourself OR in a team of up to 4 people (in which case one person should publish the level and list the other creators in the level description). Note that we only have one crown to give away, so only one person in a winning team will get it.

Q: So… where do I get the bomb and obstacles?
A: From this level. Make sure you’ve enabled the ‘Collect community prizes’ option in your settings.

Q: Does my contraption need to pick up the bomb at the start and drop it off at the end?
A: No, it can start the level already in the contraption. But if you’re looking for an extra challenge, go for it!

Q: What if the bomb explodes when you’re judging my level due to your incompetent driving?
A: Then YOU FAIL. Mwhahaha!!!!! Not really, we’ll restart the level a couple of times until we get the hang of it. Just don’t make it too hard for us, okay?

Q: The obstacles you’ve provided are ugly and don’t suit my level. Can I make them pretty?
A: Yep, go crazy. Change the material, add stickers and decos… just make sure the obstacles stay the same size!

Q: The obstacles you’ve given me are too easy to overcome and do not show off the true potential of my amazingsauce contraption. Can I make some of my own?
A: Yes! As long as our obstacles are there, make whatever else you want.

Q: You said we can’t change the logic on the bomb?
A: Correct.

Q: Not even a little tag so I can detect it using sensors?
A: One step ahead of you! A red tag with the label “Bomb” is already contained within the bomb’s microchip, should you need it.

Q: Do I need to post an LBP.me link to my level or anything like that? How do I enter?!
A: Just make sure you publish your entry with “CC18″ in the title. You don’t need to post a link or do anything else.

Q: I live in another corner of the Earth and find all this time zone malarkey very confusing.
A: Yeah, it doesn’t help that British Summer Time begins on the day of the deadline. Click here to find out when the CC18 deadline is in your local time.

  Hovering is fine, just as long as its not too far off the ground and is still affected by the obstacles.

  It’s pretty simple logic and the bomb behaves in a predictable way so we’ll notice if something’s not right. If we suspect anything we’ll ask the creator to let us see the level in create mode before making it a finalist… Of course, it probably won’t come to that because the Contraption Challenge community is lovely and would never cheat ;)

    np, you should also look into if the collision glitch affects bombs or not, simple. Take 2 pieces sticker panel, glue them to the object. use the trim fuction and drag 1 corner of 1 of the glued sticker panels to the opposit corner (upper right to lower left) until the sticker panel disapears. this will leave behind the bomb and 1 piece of sticker panel. in this case most objects would become non-collodial. pretty much you can walk thru em. Just an idea for you to check out, but if you can tell visually when the bombs should have exploded then glitch or no glitch or cheats etc, this should be a smooth contest. and I look forward to seeing the contraptions.

Question: Am I allowed to make the level into a form of “Multitasking” as in where you have to protect the bomb from radioactively mutated mechanical birds or something?
Suggestion: You should add a rule that says something about not encasing the bomb almost completely in a material that has the ability to be stable.

  We would recommend that if you want to add lots of extras to make it into an actual game then you do this as a second level and call it something like “CC18: My Contraption (game mode)”. Extra features won’t get you additional points in judging.

  It needs to move along the ground. Driving, hopping, hovering, etc is fine. It just can’t fly or swim/float.

  1. Yes, and make sure your profile and levels are visible on LBP.me
  2. There’s nothing you can do about this. We regularly see multiple entries with the same idea (this doesn’t necessarily mean it was copied) but what’s more important is the execution of the idea. If you’re really worried about it just wait until the day of the deadline before publishing.

Ello! Thanks so much for doing another one of these challenges, guys :). Quick question(s).

Once the vehicle has passed each of the obstacles, it isn’t necessary for it to have the abiltiy to go back and do it again? A one time deal-io would be fine, correct?

The bomb. I absolutely love how you decorated it, especially without using DLC. But it might not fit a theme. is it cool to sticker/deco it? Or dare I say change the material?

Other than that, I don’t see too many questions that aren’t stated in the wonderfully phrased Q&A. Can’t wait to see what people come up with! :)

  Small enough so that the obstacles are still an obstacle for it. There aren’t any exact measurements, but anything a lot bigger than the obstacles, say 2 or 3 times the size, is probably too big.

The thin layer of metal on the bomb is interfering with my 3d layers and I really would rather keep the bomb in the back layer. Can I change the thin metal layer to, say, sticker panel. It would lighten the weight a little but the bomb will be safe in my vehicle either way :P

Sounds like a peace of cake, but those obstacles are HUGE. Like, my vehicle is so small… wtf, well my level’s come along great so far and I believe I may finally have that crown, plus that pack looks pretty legit for my costume needs. Hope we all have a fairly judged contest. Just a question, will you be allowed to have a dark and more of a surreal theme? Just wondering cause I’mm always looked down upon for having one. I’ve been called a satanist, lol I swear I’m christian ^^’.

I’ve got a problem :( I’ve accidently edited my entry’s description after the deadline while I was reading through its reviews and I had no clue that it would make my level say it was updated. Does my entry still count? I have friends who can prove it has no changes made in the level itself. I spent ages on my entry, I really don’t want its effort to go to waste. :(

Hey guys, I have a problem. I didn’t know about the whole timezone thing until I just now and I posted and updated my level after the british deadline but before the us deadline. PLEASE include my level! I worked very hard on it and It would be terrible for me to miss out on this. If it’s any consideration I followed the rules to a T even before the deadline in america (not british deadline because I didn’t know). Here is a link to my level: http://lbp.me/v/jt9gx7

  As a follow up I live in Texas so my timezone is Central time. I first published my level a about 7:00 pm (Central time) and last updated my level no later than 11:15 pm (Central time). In other words, I had no idea about the timezone difference and I intended to complete my entry before the deadline which I did in my own time. I would greatly appreciate it if you included my level in the participants list as I worked long and hard on it.

Hi everyone. Just wanted to quickly say that we ARE reading all your comments, even if we haven’t replied to you individually. A few people are concerned that they published their level after the deadline and what we are going to do with these levels. We (the judges) will be discussing this and seeing how widespread the problem is before deciding for sure, then we’ll let you know.
